Buying a Franchise?

Congratulations!  Whether you are fulfilling a dream or taking the next step to achieve your goals, buying a franchise can be a wonderfully satisfying decision for you and your family.  After all, many people consider the freedom of owning a business the true American Dream, and what better way than investing your hard-earned money into a concept with a proven track record and systems for you to follow.
Traditionally there have been two different avenues to follow in your quest for the right franchise:​

  1. Working Directly with the Franchise Yourself
    Franchises are usually very good at what they do and that includes selling franchises!  Because they sell everyday and you buy once in a lifetime, you are at a significant disadvantage. They may pretend to be selective to whom they sell, but in reality are not! Most buyers don't even realize that many franchises are negotiable. But you have to know how to do it.  And you can't believe anything they say...the only information that counts is in their Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD).  
  2. Engage the services of a Franchise Broker
    Franchise Brokers charge nothing to the buyer.  However, they receive up to 50% of the franchise fee as commission, but only if you buy. And only if they have an agreement with the franchise.  This is why they present a limited number of brands, and will shy away from those where no agreement is in place.

The American Association of Franchisees and Dealers (AAFD) describes it very well:
"When you work with a franchise broker, you must be aware that he or she has a vested financial interest in guiding you toward a limited set of franchises that he or she has an existing agreement with. This could result in highly biased advice and pressure to choose a franchise that might not truly be a good fit for you."
